Middelie is centrally situated between Amsterdam (20 km) and the picturesque little towns of Edam (3 km), Volendam (6 km), Hoorn (20 km) and Marken (16 km). Some of them are considered to be the most beautiful spots of Holland. Middelie is therefore the ideal starting point for discovering those historic places; most of them had their heyday 260 years ago. They owe their prosperity to merchandise and fishing. Edam for instance, with its warehouses for cheese and its enormous church, is very much worth visiting. Volendam is proud of its dike and port, Marken famous for its characteristic green wooden houses and lighthouse and Monnickendam is well-known for its weighing house and canals.

Close to our B&B cheese farms and clog factories are waiting for your visit. Purmerend has a shopping centre and, every Tuesday morning, a market. At the Koemarkt you will find many restaurants and pubs.

Nobody will leave our B&B without having visited Amsterdam, the famous Venice of the North. We can only mention a limited number of sights: the canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh museum, the Anne Frank house, Madame Tussaud, the red light district, the Bijenkorf, the Jordaan quarter, the Waterloo flee market, the Albert Cuijp market, the shops in the Leidsestraat and P.C. Hooftstraat, the Vondelpark and many pubs and restaurants…

After an exhausting day in town you will be glad to return to the calm of the rural country.

The North Sea beach is easy to reach (35 km).

Try a ride on a bike, like the Dutch do: many cycle tracks pass by our house. Discover the old landscape. You can also have a look at the polder from your canoe. At various places you can hire bicycles, canoes or electric boats.
